Lake Isabella is not a great place for beginners unless you have boat support. It a side-shore wind condition and can be very gusty with high winds and can be a bit unpredictable shutting off from time to time. The water is cool even in the summer but not to bad in a shortie I typically wear a 2/3 full suite. They have a ton of great local kiters there so if you go ask plenty of questions to help keep you out of trouble!

Lake Mohave 6 Mile Cove & 9 Mile

Six Mile Cove is great in the spring and summer months to kiteboard, Wing Surf, & Foilboard but the campers and parking is a mess in the summertime. Winter time its all about the North Winds but the water can get very cold after November but worth the drive. AWD or 4X4’s vehicles are recommended to get to 9 Mile Cove but I made it in two different 2WD vehicles only getting stuck in the sand once ;) You will need to be very efficient on going up wind as the beach is small and you could end up or down river very easy if things don’t go your way. All I can say is make sure you bring booties as it could be a painful walk back through the rocky desert!

One of the best places to learn kiteboarding in Southern California. This is where I bought my first kite and took a lesson with Bart at SoCal Kitesurfing. You can absolutely do it all here, with light to medium winds in the summer and an occasional crazy storm in the winter to make for some exciting kitesurfing. There are some great Kiteboarding School located right at the end of what they call the Lollipop to help with all levels of kiteboarding & foilboarding skills. Please before you decide to take up kiteboarding, TAKE LESSONS! for your safety and all the people on the beach as well!
